OUR HISTORY

Built on a heritage of quality and leadership dating over a century, with products loved for generations, San Miguel Foods traces its beginnings back to 1890 as Southeast Asia’s first brewery, La Fabrica de Cerveza San Miguel, which became San Miguel Corporation in 1964. The company’s success in beer became the springboard for entry into a variety of food categories.

San Miguel Corporation entered the food industry with Magnolia Ice Cream in 1925. This was followed by entry into the livestock industry with B-Meg Feeds in 1953 and Magnolia Chicken in 1972. In the 1990s, SMC acquired Monterey Farms, Star Margarine and Dari Crème brands. All these products - ice cream, animal feeds, chicken, pork, beef and spreads - bore the San Miguel stamp of quality.

Fast forward to 2001 – San Miguel acquired another food giant, Pure Foods Corporation, which was established in 1956 and listed at the Philippine Stock Exchange in 1973. By this point, Pure Foods was into feeds, poultry, flour milling and processed meats, the last of which was in a joint venture with Hormel Foods International, a leading packaged food company in the United States. It also had a stake in Indonesia, a processed meats joint venture with the Hero Group. The company was renamed to San Miguel Pure Foods Company Incorporated and became the vehicle for all of San Miguel’s food businesses.

Entry into new categories then commenced with the acquisition of a feeds and hog farming business in Vietnam in 2003, a joint venture with Super Coffee Corporation in 2005, construction of the Golden Bay Grain Terminal in 2014 and acquisition of La Pacita Biscuits in 2015. Super Coffee Corporation was later acquired by Jacob Douwe Egberts (JDE), one of the world’s leading coffee players, opening up more opportunities for the company’s coffee business to grow.

In 2018, San Miguel Corporation consolidated San Miguel Brewery and Ginebra San Miguel Inc. into San Miguel Pure Foods Company and renamed it San Miguel Food and Beverage Inc., further expanding opportunities for synergy among the three businesses.

Today, the food division of San Miguel Food and Beverage is known as San Miguel Foods, one of the largest and most diversified food companies in the country. Owning a portfolio of products and brands loved by millions, the company has built a name that’s synonymous to fresh, safe-to-eat, and great-tasting food, offering convenience and value for money for Filipino families.
